Taking the Three Refuges

After lighting candies and 3 aromatic incense sticks, bow or prostrate thrice in homage to the Buddha, Doctrine, and Order of Disciples. Then, with joined palms, recite:

Nama Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhasa [Thrice]

(Homage to the Lord, the Emancipated, the Enlightened Buddha)

Mayam Bhante Tisaranena Saha Panca Silani Yacama

(May I receive the Triple Refuge together with the five precepts)

Dutlyampi Mayam Bhante Tisaranena Saha Pance Silani Yacama

(For the second time, may 1 receive the Triple Refuge together with the five precepts)

Tatiyampi Mayam Bhante Tisaranena Saha Panca Silani Yacama

(For the third time, may 1 receive the Triple Refuge together with the five precepts)

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhassa [Thrice]

Buddham Saranam Gacchami

(I accept the Buddha as may Refuge)

Dhammam Saranam Gacchami

(I accept the Doctrine as my refuge)

Sangham Saranam Gacchami

(I accept the Order of Disciples as my refuge)

Dutiyampi Buddham Saranam Gacchami

(For the second time 1 accept the Buddha as my refuge)

Dutiyampi Dhammam Saranam Gacchami

(For the second time 1 accept the Doctrine as my refuge)

Dutiyampi Sangham Saranam Gacchami

(For the second time 1 accept the Order of Disciples as my refuge)

Tatlyampi Buddham Saranam Gacchami

(For the third time 1 accept the Buddha as my refuge)

Tatlyampi Dhammam Saranam Gacchami

(For the third time 1 accept the Doctrine as my refuge)

Tatiyampi Sangham Saranam Gacchami

(For the third time I accept the Order of Disciples as my refuge)

PANCA SILA (The Five Precepts)

Panatipata Veramani Sikkhapadam Samadiyami

(I undertake to observe the precept of refraining from harming any living thing whatsoever)

Adinnadana Veramani Sikkhapadam Samadiyarni

(I undertake to observe the precept of refraining from theft)

Kamesumicchacara Veramani Sikkhapadam Samadiyami

(I undertake to observe the precept of refraining from sexual immorality)

Musavada Veramani Sikkhapadam Samadiyami

(I undertake to observe the precept of refraining from falsehood)

Sura Meraya Majjapamadatthana Veramani Sikkhapadam Samadiyami

(I undertake to observe the precept of refraining from partaking intoxicants of any kind whatsoever)
